# Plugin Activation Error

 * I have been trying to install several plugins lately, including buddypress and
   GD Star Rating. I tried installing them through the one click install and they
   didn’t unzip. So then I installed them manually. They show up as available plugins
   now, but when i go to activate i get the following error:
 * Error 500 – Internal server error
 * An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.
 * I use 1and1 for hosting but not sure if this is something on their end, wordpress
   or the plugin.

 * Try modifying your site’s .htaccess file and adding this line:
    `AddType x-mapp-
   php5 .php`
 * Seems that by default 1&1 has you running PHP4. I have an old’ish [blog post](http://www.solo-technology.com/blog/2010/01/10/quick-tip-wordpress-on-1and1-com/)
   that discusses this in more detail if necessary.
