[Plugin: Absolute Privacy] Need for approval email not being sent

I have the latest version of this plugin, BuddyPress and WordPress. For some reason, the initial email telling the user they need to be approved never gets sent. The only way I could get it to work is following the guidance given by cwhittl here:

Basically says to comment out lines 939 and 940 in the plugin’s functions.php file:

//if ( empty( $plaintext_pass ) )
//		return;

I have done that and verified that it works, but is there any other way around this without having to modify the plugin?
