• I have two self hosted WordPress sites. They are on different accounts but the same package with the same hosting company. They were installed from cPanel at about the same time and run the same theme “2011”. the are both 3.1.1

One has the plug in panel, the other does not and I do want the plug in facility.

I’m new to WordPress – any advice please? I have searched the forum but all I find is “com” sites don’t have plugins, “org” sites do. Both my sites are “org” and should be essentially identical.

  • You’re right both .org self hosted sites should have the plugin dashboard. I’d suggest making sure you’re logged in with the admin user. After you verify that, you’ll want to disable any plugins by renaming the plugins folder via FTP and resetting the theme to the default theme.

Starting from a blank default installation is always best practice when troubleshooting. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, it could have been an error during the installation process and you may need to re-install it. I hope this helps!

    Thank you for the advice.

I think, on reflection, that when I was first looking into WordPress I started with a WordPress hosted site then very soon moved to a self hosted. I followed the directions on the WordPress website to move to the new host so perhaps I don’t have a clean ‘org’ installation after all. My other site was started from scratch so is a clean ‘org’ site. At the time I had no idea of the ramifications of this.

Can you please tell me how to get a clean installation without losing all my data on the present site?

Just to put this to bed. Somehow , probably because of the migration from WordPress host to my own hosting I was stuck with a ‘com’ build which meant no plug ins. I exported the data, put a new version of WordPress on the webhost and there was the ‘org’ version with plug in panel.

I have imported the contents and though there will be an hour or two tidying up I seem to be OK.
