Plug-in Loads EXTREMELY Slow

Hey everyone,
I’m putting the final touches on a WordPress site for a client (http://thesoundofchange.org/2014/) and this plug-in is acting a bit strange.
When I run it on my localhost, everything loads fine (within 1-2 seconds), but when I try it on the server (link above), it takes anywhere from 8-12 seconds to load, which is problematic because the footer doesn’t load until this plug-in does.
I currently have all the default settings in place, should I try changing something?
I’ve read about other plug-ins like “Lazy Widget Loader” that would at least allow me to load the footer and then this plug-in, so I might just use that if I can’t speed things up.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What platform are you running on Windows or Linux?

I’ll download the latest version and try again.
The server is running Linux.
If this doesn’t work, I think I’ll just start fresh with a clean WordPress install and see what happens. Maybe a plug-in I used right after installing and then deactivated, like Better WP Security, changed something in the WP core?

I’ve changed the default to fetch 50 Tweets (it’s in line 989) and have uploaded the updated development version.
Are you confident to play around with that number directly – or would you like me to upload some other versions in case there is still a problem?

Is that because 50 didn’t work? It would probably be useful to find the maximum ‘safe’ level.
This will at least mean that the 24 second delay only happens when the cache expires (every few hours?) – although it would be useful to work out why this might be happening.
PS: The latest version has cut the cache size by about 70% so that should help even more…
