• Howdy,

I used to blog on WP over 10 years ago and it was…both simpler and more complicated. Or it had it’s pro’s and con’s. Either way, it’s changed quite a bit. So have the plugins and there are so many more options and functions. Some things look like they might be easier to do this time around if I understood what I need to do instead of trying to do it the “old” way.

For example, I don’t understand this new menus functionality as I think it was built in before or how it differs from widgets. I’m not sure what shortcodes are or how to use them and the theme customization is completely different from 10 years ago.

Is there something that goes over these things step-by-step for a beginner/intermediate person and makes recommendations for security — and the whys of each option? Why I might use tags vs categories? What about SEO? Also other best practices for the current version?

I did see the list of books in the documentation but some of them seem to be for developers and others for previous versions. I want to be sure before I invest. I understand if I need more than one book as well.

    Thanks!

    J.

  • When it comes to wordpress, there is not any better source for wordpress users than http://codex.wordpress.org/. Here you can find anything related to WordPress. It is handy not only for beginners, but also to experts.best of luck!

Whilst the Codex has the most up-to-date information, it has a huge amount of content, doesn’t guide you through everything step-by-step and can be daunting for beginners. So a book is a good idea. But books go out of date fast, so buy something published recently.

And bear in mind that some newer features (like the Menu in the Customizer) only just appeared so won’t be in books yet.

“WordPress for Dummies” is pretty good. Maybe “WordPress: the missing manual”.

I’ve not gotten it but WordPress for Dummies is written by someone very well respected in the WordPress community.
