  • I use Jetpack and I use Yoast.

I am aware the “featured” photo is the one that should be in the Twitter card or the Facebook share, and if not, then Yoast has one that you pick as the default.

I’m sure you realize how bad this works out for most people, and I (for one) don’t understand why, when on FB we used to be able to pick one of the various pictures a share would pull in, we cannot choose any image when we push it out. In fact, once shared, we cannot edit the image or do ANYTHING AT ALL besides passively “rescrape” using the Debugger (which doesn’t let you take an action to fix it). I’m going to stop using the Share during publishing a blog post until I can have reassurance this is fixed – so that if and when I do share it, I can choose an image on my computer to share before I paste the link.

I know what you’re thinking “the solution is…” but I don’t WANT a featured photo! It looks like crap in my theme and design. I want to intro my blog post and then use an image to show what I’m talking about. And the FIRST image, or if the developers would be so kind, a CHOICE of images if I have more than one, is the one I would want sent to my social media shares.

To have a standard photo – my wallpaper, or my logo – rather than the photo of what I have in the blog post has ZERO attraction at all to few people who have liked my social media accounts. This is painful. No one clicks. It’s even WORSE when Yoast gives me a default “other,” and it’s showing my “marquee” product, but not the stuff I’m actually writing about.

THIS IS PAINFUL AND I KNOW I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE suffering. I know that Facebook and Twitter must have something to do with it because it’s so stupid to be locked down to one image for the og:image thing, but I should not have to be an App developer in order to have this feature. It really is upsetting, actually.

As we all have to design to respond to pain points, can you please please PLEASE prioritize an enduring FIX for this in the NEXT release of Gutenberg? I want at least the FIRST image, or the ability to pick one within the body of the post! Thanks.

  • Gutenberg isn’t designed to help share images on social media as it is designed for writing. As you mentioned both Yoast and Jetpack, depending upon which one is handling the images it may be better to post about this issue on their respective support forums to see if you can get help there

But Gutenberg is how WordPress works now, it’s got a lot of other intelligent things that acknowledge the direction that content creation and strategy have gone and (are going to go further). No one READS content UNLESS they’ve had a link or a share in a relevant place in order to get to it. The presentation of the social media share is now an INHERENT part of writing an article, just like SEO is non-optional if you want to be discovered by search keywords.

Jetpack is also developed by Automattic and it has a free plan (mine is paid for one blog, but not the other) that has a lot of value-add, but I strongly believe that preparing the presentation of the images within the blog post is and should be a core function of all versions of WordPress, and definitely prepared and/or social-share compliant for the Twenty-XX themes that come with WordPress. The template I use on the above issue is Twenty Seventeen.
