There’s now well over 19,000+ Plugins for Wordress.
Plugins is the main reason I used WordPress because I can slot them altogether and create something amazing with very little knowledge of computer programming needed. But there’s now so many Plugins it’s becoming almost impossible to sort out the good from the bad.
Sometime I’ll do a search and the first few plugins that come back haven’t been updated in years. or the developer never bothered to add a simple screenshot to show us all what the thing will look like.
I would really like to see filters on the plugin in search page from my admin screen that eliminates plugins from the search results based on factors that I can pick and choose, for example plugins that haven’t been updated in 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 months, etc and eliminate plugins without screenshots.
It’s time to encourage developers to put in some real effort into the way they pass on the final product to the community and encourage them to take more time and care in preparing well written instructions, FAQ’s, etc. And also to encourage people to be able to leave proper feedback on the plugin’s they’ve used to say what’s good or bad about them.
Personally I think all the existing plugins should be moved from a maximum of 5 stars and have the number of stars increase to maybe 8. With the extra ones being earned only of they’ve got decent screenshots and instructions included.
It seems to me the people at WordPress are more interested in pushing the big numbers at us like 19,000+ plugins then pushing the quality aspect at people. I’m sure if you exclude the number of plugins that haven’t been updated in 2 years that number will be a lot less. Personally if I start seeing plugins older then 1 year I get worried.
