• Hi
I’ve created an account on WordPress and purchased a theme (Corsa) via themeforest. It won’t let me upload the theme as I understand WordPress doesn’t support the external themes, so I signed up to web hosting with Blue Host. My domain name (golddustconsultancy.com) was purchased with 1 and 1, and I am totally confused as to how to link them all up so that I can then upload the theme. WordPress suggested I transfer the DNS from where I purchased the domain but can’t find where I do that on 1 and 1.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    Sophie

  • I know nothing about the Control Panel at 1&1, but look for a “Domains” button of some kind where you can simply re-point your domain to the BlueHost nameservers:
    https://www.1and1.com/login
    https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/432
    https://www.google.com/search?q=1%261+to+bluehost+nameservers

After that has been done, your domain might be “parked” at BlueHost or it might already be assigned and pointed to your public_html folder which will be your WordPress “root” folder. If you need any help past that, just ask!

    Hey Sophie,

First of all WordPress does support external themes so do we at 1&1.

If you still want to use Blue Host then you can go to our control center and in the top navigation you will find the item “Domains”. From there you can click on the item “Manage domains”. Then select the domain and go to the select box “Domain settings”. There you find the option “Edit DNS Settings”. Then you can change the options you need to change.

    Best,
    Marko

    Hi Sophie,

I think I get your issue. You purchased a domain name (i.e., golddustconsultancy.com) from the 1&1 folks. That’s clear. Next, you established a web host account at Bluehost. Which is fine.

Note that, just in case you were wondering, the good folks at 1&1 also provide web hosting. Which in your case would place everything under one roof. But I digress. 😉

Anyway, now all you need to do is a) install WordPress on your Bluehost account and then, as Marko mentioned above, b) point your domain name to your newly installed WordPress site.

Moreover, once you have your WordPress site up and running, then you can install any number of themes and plugins. That’s one of the beauty’s of having a self-hosted WordPress site (aka, WordPress.org) vs having a WordPress hosted (aka, WordPress.com) site.

All this said, here’s a handy guide for installing and setting up your soon-to-be-running WordPress site:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

Hopefully the “The Famous 5-Minute Installation” will be all you’ll need:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Famous_5-Minute_Install

As for pointing your 1&1 purchased domain name to your new WordPress install, I believe this is the guide you’ll want to reference:

    http://help.1and1.com/domains-c36931/manage-domains-c79822/dns-c37586/use-your-own-name-server-for-a-1and1-domain-a594904.html

Marko, please correct me if I am wrong here!

Once you’ve done the above Sophie, you’ll have a WordPress site hosed by Bluehost and your domain name pointing in their direction. Note that after you have all this setup it can take up to 72 hours or so for everything to work. That is, it can take up to 72 hours for you to be able to enter golddustconsultancy.com into a web browser and be taken to your new WordPress site.

    Hope this helps!

    Randy

P.S., LOL, I almost forgot the really cool part. Once your WordPress site is up and running you’ll want to upload your newly purchased ThemeForest theme to your site and then tell your site to use your new theme. Here’s a guide for that procedure:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes

And, if by chance you have any issues with the above instructions you can always ask here or even on the theme’s support page:

    Thank you all!

Randy, I will go through those steps and fingers crossed. Quick question before I do – do I even need Blue Host to host the site for me, or can I just download WordPress on to my Mac and cancel the hosting?

    Thanks again
    Sophie

If you want your site to be visible on the internet, you need hosting.

Here’s the WordPress folks’ take on web hosting:

    https://wordpress.org/hosting/

Note that technically you could host your site on your computer. But, for your site to be accessible 24/7 you’d need your computer on and accessible 24/7. Not to mention you’d need to most likely pay your Internet Service Provider (ISP) extra $$$ for a static IP and other server related items — such as increased upload bandwidth. Then there’s security concerns, etcetera, etcetera, etc. So, like WPyogi said, realistically, “If you want your site to be visible on the internet, you need hosting.” 🙂

P.S., One exception to this is if you want to host your own development or staging site. And want fellow developers or even your clients to access your sites. Then you could easily run the site on one of your home computers and even get away with keeping your dynamic IP address (as opposed to a statically assigned one) and utilize a service like this one:

    http://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/getting-started-with-no-ip-com/

But I digress, web hosting is relatively cheap nowadays and so worth the money.
