When my users try to log in they get “ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.” When I try to lopg in as one of my users I get the same thing. However, thankfully, I am still able to log in. I thought this might have to do with Wordfence but I have deleted it and used their WF Assistant plugin to “Remove all Wordfence Data in the Database and elsewhere” which dis not help. Deactivating all other plugins does not help. Creating a completely new user does not help. I’m hoping someone can help me resolve this login issue.

    Thanks

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install “Health Check”: https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/ On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for JUST you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site. You can then use its admin bar menu to turn on/off plugins and themes one at a time. See https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/ for more information.

    See http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-wp-admin/

I installed Health Check and the first thing it told my was the php was out of date. Could that be the problem? So far I tried changing the theme as suggested and decativating all plugins but that didn’t help,

I updated php and that did not resolve the issue. Will follow the other steps.

Additionally, I mention it because you yourself mentioned you updated your PHP so you may be familiar with this other topic: you may want to experiment with something, perform a failed login, and immediately after this, go check the “error log”, also called “apache error log” for your website.

Keywords: “error”, “fatal”, “fail”. If there’s a brand new event with that name, the error message may be relevant to what’s happening inside your blog.

If you must ask your host about it, then you can’t view it immediately. In that case, you can ask them if they have events recorded as caused by your own IP (which you’ll have to give them, ask google “what’s my IP” and collect both the IPV4 and IPV6).

It’s not certain there will be an error message recorded at all, but it’s within the field of the possible, let’s say.

    Good luck, anyway!

Yjhe problem is resolved. I really appreciate the ideas people had.

In the end the culprit was a GoDaddy plugin called gd-system-plugin. It doesn’t show up in Plugins because it’s in the mu-plugins directory. We removed it and it fixed the problem. However, apparently GoDaddy redeploys it automatically because it came back. But things are working ok with the new version. They muust have pushed a bad version out which never got updated.
