• Dear friends,

Paperness.it is a self hosted WP site for my wife’s blog and woo commerce site. It has been running since 2018 without troubles. Lately life changed quite dramatically and I haven’t tended to the site like before. It’s a few days I receiving alternating alerts about the site being UP and then DOWN every few minutes.

If you visit the website you might find it up or with a 500 error from the provider.

I tried updating (update to 6.22 blue button) the WP version which is currently stuck at 6.05 but every time I try I only get to the “Downloading update from https://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-6.2.2-new-bundled.zip…” but usually get the 500 error and nothing happens.

Disk spaces for the web site and the databases are just around 25% of the respective quotas.

I tried renaming the plugins folder to disable them but the behaviour persists.

I tried backleveling PHP from 8.0 to 7.4, not working.

CGI is You are running Perl version 5.024001 with linux

I have performed a database backup via phpMyAdmin and am backing up the website via FileZilla.

The themes are updated save for the Divi theme on which the website is based and I do not have a license for it anymore.

    What would you suggest trying?

What would happen if I just reinstalled a new WP with my provider’s utility and then restored the website and DB? Wouldn’t I just go back to the current 6.05 version?

    Thanks for any help!

    Robert

  • Check the error log in the hosting. An error 500 should show up there. You should also be able to identify the cause there. The support of your hoster can certainly help you to find the error log.

Alternatively, you can also enable debugging in WordPress. How to do that is described here:

    Debugging in WordPress

You should also be able to find the cause of the error in the log file created in this way.

Your idea with the import of a backup can work, but not necessarily. The error could occur again afterwards.

Thanks to your help I managed to activate WP’s own debugging.
I see a lot of huge spam messages being posted and waiting for moderation all from a .ru domain. Maybe someone trying to break my WP?

There are many entries in the log such as the following:

[03-Jun-2023 06:14:17 UTC] PHP Notice: Function map_meta_cap was called incorrectly. The post type shop_order is not registered, so it may not be reliable to check the capability “edit_post” against a post of that type. Please see Debugging in WordPress for more information. (This message was added in version 4.4.0.) in /home/mhd-01/www.paperness.it/htdocs/wp-includes/functions.php on line 5833

After 3 days the very inexpensive but mediocre provider replied that it seems it’s THEIR problem with PHP and they’re investigating … wonder if it is true.

Are any of the above log messages useful in any case?

In the excerpt you have shown there are only notices from PHP which are not caused by an error 500. If the hoster has now identified the problem itself, you should wait for their feedback on this.

Thanks a lot. Let’s hope they get their act together on Monday.

While we’re at it, do you have indications on how to fix the errors seen in the log?
