Support » Plugin: Simple Facebook Connect » Please Advise: Need FB Both Fanpage and App Profile Page?

  • Hi.
I think this is a relevant question to many people implementing this plugin, and I would really appreciate some input.

    In the plugin it says:
“The Application wall acts as a Fan Page in all respects, however some sites have been using Fan Pages previously, and already have communities and content built around them. Facebook offers no way to migrate these, so the option to use an existing Fan Page is offered for people with this situation.”

So I’m correct in saying that generally you should delete your old fanpage and build everything around your app/app wall/app profile page? Including sharing links with followers, generating likes, etc?

I only had about 15 people in my old fanpage so I deleted it and decided to start fresh with the Application wall. However now when I search for my page, my app rarely comes up and when it does it goes straight to my “canvas page” which is just a welcome image, it doesn’t automatically go to the App Wall. The App Wall seems very difficult to find except by going through the facebook developer’s portal.

I am doing the right thing by relying soley on my app to replace my old page?

    Thank you.

Why did you set up your app to have a canvas page in the first place?

My page is an app. What do you see it as?

Just configure your app the way you want it to be. If you want it to go to the app wall, configure it that way on Facebook.

OK I removed the canvas page, and now it defaults to my page wall, thank you.

I still want to clarify though, it is your suggestion to just rely soley on your app wall/page and not have both the app and a fanpage?

Disadvantages of this are your site comes up as an “app” in the search, and it seems to show monthly active users instead of likes?

Can you have a fanpage and keep your app unfindable and just use it for your fb connect integration with site?

I’m not trying to debate I’m interested to know what the most intelligent way to go about this is.

Also, how do you get your app page to have the url ?

I know this isn’t a wordpress question but I think other’s who use this plugin are going to want to know this as well.

I too am having any issue…I tried both with and without a canvas url and when you click on the FB Connect button, it asks for access to your wall…but never registers the user on my site. The fb box goes away and the website is still sitting on the home page waiting for you to login, register or click on fb connect.

You can set it up however you want. I don’t use a Fan Page because I don’t see the point of having one when I already have the Application’s Wall. How it looks on Facebook is really of little consequence as far as I’m concerned.

To get a vanity name, go to and set the vanity name for the App or Page. Note you can only do this once, and you have to have a certain number of fans/users before it will let you do it, and you can’t ever ever change it. So make sure you get it right the first time.

    Hi Otto.
    Thanks for the helpful response.
Is there some kind of extra analytics or integration you get as an advantage to using your fb app (which is needed for fb connect) as your “page” instead of having is hidden on fb search and using your fb fan page?
Otherwise, for my situation, having a fanpage and a hidden app for my website seems more ideal.

You can’t actually “hide” an app. It will show up in searches and the stories it posts will have a “via AppName” link below them that links to the App’s wall.

There’s no “extra” insight benefits you get from it, except that it’s less stuff on your Insights page. The insights for the app and a page are basically the same.
