Plant Taxonomy

I’d like to create a website where I can enter data on various plants: name, classification, photo, etc. To expedite the process I’d like to create a page with various drop down or fill in boxes for the family, genus, species of each plant. Is there a way to enter a list of values and have one selection affect the choices in the next (if x then y)? For instance if you entered a genus of Acer (maple trees) then the species box would only have maple species available? I’d like to stay with the core or popular/actively developed plugins if possible. I’m willing to do some research/basic coding if necessary but I’m hoping one of you experts can at least point me in the right direction so I don’t waste time trying things that won’t work.
