• Hi all,

I’m quite sure that this is not the right place for asking my questions, but I’ll give it a shot…!
I’m currently developing 2 WP sites, which I’m planning to host somewhere and I’d like to ask a couple of questions:

    1. The 2 sites are going to use the same content (more or less), with a different theme and perhaps some editors (users); I was wondering if there is a possibility to use the same database, thus enabling the editor to make a single post for both sites.

    2. Given the fact that the question above has a positive answer, does the WordPress MultiSite architecture fit in my plan?

    3. If I choose to use a shared plan hosting, can I host both sites on the same plan? Do I have to pay attention to any special requirements from the hosting company?

    Thanks in advance

  • Your questions are appropriate here.

    1) It might be possible to share posts or pages across sites, using a hacked custom page template. It is the same “more or less” that will cause problems I am sure. It may be simpler if the author was to master the content on one site, then with a browser tab open on each site, do a copy / paste of the content.

    2) Multisite just might help you managing these twin sites. Realise that multisite is a more complex environment.

    3) Any decent hosting plan will accommodate two sites, one will be the primary domain, the other will be an “addon domain”, make sure that your package includes some addon domains. Other things to look for is that the use the cPanel website management package, it is by far the commonest and I have yet to see a single superior feature on any competitor. Support hours and type is relevant, is it 24/7, email or phone or text chat and any limitations ? Backup procedures are also important.
You largely get what you pay for.

Thanks a lot for your answers!

One final thing I’d like to ask, in order to equalize the overhead of running two sites with the same content is if I can have a single media repository for both of them. I know I can upload my media to the first one and get the urls on the second one, but I think a junior author would be more comfortable if he/she could get the same media results no matter which site is administering.

    Thanks again for your help
