Plain text editor

    Does anyone have a recommendation for a text editor that works in absolute plain text, similar to notepad++, html kit etc, for wordpress. I write in code and find it frustrating that wordpress adds <p></p> where I need a
    etc. I can find a million WYSIWYG editors but I really need to get hold of a plain text editor to replace the built in version. Any ideas please?
