• the dashboard UI differs between the self-hosted WordPress and and the wordpress.com hosted versions. specifically:

“Featured Content” is missing from the self-hosted Appearance->Customize menu
    also
in Settings there is no “To Infinity and beyond” option

its impossible to emulate the look and feel of the theme example:
    http://discoveringbelgium.com/
    with out these menu features.

i’m concerned that i might have missed some essential step in installation but then most of the functionality is there, except essential differences in the dashboard menus

my dummy attempts are at http://www.davies.com/wordpress

thanks for any help or ptrs.

the missing “featured content” selection can be fixed by installing http://wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/

this does NOT provide the 2nd issue above:
in Settings there is no “To Infinity and beyond” option

    still looking for help….
    what a very quiet forum….

and, finally, the Infinte scroll feature is also provided by jetpack:

    phew.

    thanks, everyone.

I installed jetpack but still going to no avail.

gaobo, i’m glad someone else is one hand clapping in the wordpress forest.

so, i have continued with lots of experiments and have noticed improvement when i shrink the size of the images in the media library. the initial experiments were done with images whose max dimensions were 1600xN. i was only able to build a 6 image tiled mosaic gallery. even then only i needed to refresh the page many many times (Cmd-R) to have the images gradually appear. i then blew away the image library (the site is now non functional while i think about the next step**) and replaced the images with smaller ones of 1024xN. the smaller images allow me to build a mosaic gallery of 10 images at most – if i am lucky and don’t get tired hitting the Cmd-R key.

i should note that i have a parallel site at http://apeterd.wordpress.com that works perfectly with 1600xN images and as large a count as i would ever need. in fact, i notice every other pictorico themed blog i have found is hosted at wordpress.com. i haven’t founf a single one self-hosted – yet.

this whole mess is incredibly frustrating and i am disappointed in the absence of help/support/encouragement from other more knowledgeable forum members/support people. where is automattic in all this – do they just develop for the commercial site? am i making a huge assumption by assuming that everything that runs on the commercial site will run on a self-hosted site (with jetpack plugin of course)? i know we are not alone in this but every thread on the topic gets closed off as “resolved” and i’m damned if i can find the resolution. weird.

so as the point of the blog is to write a blog and not spend days and nights getting the blog to function as advertised i am about to take down my server and write the thing on the commercial site.

experiments i would have liked to try include forcing the image reduction/mosaic-ifying to take place locally rather than at the wordpress CDN. something is maxing out as the quantity of data reaches a certain size – either time or memory footprint or something.

    ** file under failure.
    in other words: giving up.

hey i have added a post .. but in the home page.. how you get that thumbnail type pic… mine stays with that default blue image.

I am very new to wordpress..trying to make my blog.. please help.. how to change it.
