pics upload to blog but do not "crunch"

Please write all answers in plain English and include all steps. I am a moron and a technophobe.

When I try to upload pics to my blog, they upload but then don’t “crunch.” After about 3 minutes (I have timed it) of “crunching”, “http” appears in red letters.

Also everything is very danged slow: site is slow to open, pages are slow to load, everything is just slow.
