 * I want to present users with list of all my categories BEFORE showsing a list
   of posts. Then only the posts for the chosen category will show. Please advise.

 * Thanks you for your quick reply. I don’t want the widget to display any posts
   to start with, and to only show a pull-down arrow and a default choice such as“
   Click the Arrow to Pick a Category”. (Your description on the WordPress widget
   download area seems to indicate you have provided for this function but I don’t
   see how to configure it.) Then, when the user would click the arrow, the drop-
   down list would show a list of all my available categories. The user should be
   able to pick the category they want from the list. Is this doable? Thanks! (I
   had a Word doc ready to attach with illustrations but apparently this forum doesn’t
   provide for attachments. Can I send you the doc by email?)

 * I almost understand your queries. You want option to select category from dropdown
   in frontend, right?
