PHP installation missing required MySQL extension

I’m getting this message in a sporadic fashion. Sometimes it comes up, as the only thing on the screen, then it doesn’t.
Can anyone tell me what this means please? I’m not a programmer…
“Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension which is required by WordPress.”
