  • I like Gutenberg. I do not love it and I’m not euphoric either. I can understand the criticism that Gutenberg should remain a plugin. But I do not hate it. I will make friends with it. And I think all that Gutenberg bashing is absolutely unnecessary.

I can understand that developers worry about the effort that adjustments for Gutenberg may entail. I can understand that many people fear for their business model. But that are no reasons to make innovations bad.

I understand that maintainers of business blogs do not want their users to get all the new opportunities that Gutenberg offers. It’s about corporate design. I can also understand that their users just want to or have to type their texts quickly. I am in this situation too. Just install the Classic Editor plugin and forget.

I can understand that Gutenberg is a radical change and that many have got used to what they have known for years. I feel the same – I’m using WordPress for about 10 years now.

But is Gutenberg really bad? I don’t think so. I do not need it either, but I do not have to hate it therefore. Obviously people are working hard on Gutenberg. Why do some have to make life difficult for them with useless bashing?

It seems that constructive criticism is taken seriously. And I do not think that all the meaningless negative reviews without real content here actually corresponds to the opinion of the majority of WordPress users. The majority of WordPress users are people without programming skills and without lot of technical skills. They will certainly love Gutenberg.

With this majority of users in mind, the core integration of Gutenberg makes sense. I understand, if you see it different – but I think the majority will love Gutenberg. Gutenberg is a good middle ground between a pure editor and a page builder. That’s the only thing that makes sense to preserve the character of WordPress and to face Wix, Squarespace and others.

Personally I have never missed something like Gutenberg. Personally I don’t need Gutenberg. But it is not bad. You do not have to love it but you do not have to make it bad. I do not love it either. But I like it.

Now two comments on version 3.7:

With activated Unified Toolbar – without Spotlight Mode – the currently edited block has no border. I think that’s bad and should be changed.

The Spotlight Mode is great. But what bothers me is that the entire content is rendered semitransparent if no block is active. I think it would be better to show the whole content normally in that case.

I’m not a native English speaker, so please forgive me any mistakes
