• Hello,

Boy I am at a standstill, in trying to figure out how I can get set the right permissions, so that I can use the Template Editor.

I have tried every recommended permissions string, I think you call it. I have chomd the template file 666, and 777 and 755. Nothing works! I even tried to set various permissions for the whole wp-contents folder, to no avail.

I also contacted the tech support depart of my domain hosing provider, and they said they haven’t got any default permissions set, that would interfer with my trying to edit my theme templates.

I am wondering if anyone here, has any more ideas about what I could do. I am using the latest WordPress script.
because no matter what I do I always see this…

“If this file was writable you could edit it.”

    Regards,
    Debbie

    Try this:

    1. Temporarily set the permissions for /wp-content/, /themes/, the specific theme’s directory, and the theme’s files to 777.

    2. Return to the theme editor. If you still see “If this file was writable you could edit it,” log out, clear your browser’s cache and cookies, and quit your browser.

    3. Open your browser, login to your admin interface, and return to the theme editor.

4a. If the “If this file was writable you could edit it” error is gone, immediately reset the permissions for the directories back to 755 and the theme files back to 666. Now, return to the theme editor and enjoy editing your theme.

4b. If the “If this file was writable you could edit it” error is still there, then I think that you’re out of luck. Your hosting provider must be doing something to block WP’s ability to edit those files. Immediately reset the permissions for the directories back to 755 and the theme files back to 666. In this case, I think that you can safely set your theme files to 644, since you obviously won’t be editing them through WP. Since you can’t use the theme editor to edit the files, you can download the files and edit them in a plain text editor, or (if your FTP client supports it) edit the files in your FTP client’s companion editor.

I am sorry it took me so long to get back and post. I followed your suggestions, and it worked perfectly!. Thank you! I hope I can use the same method with all the other templates, if they give me the same trouble.
