Permissions got my site in a mess

  • I’ve run into a mess with my site today http://www.bowalndwalks.co.uk. It all started by me trying to upload larger images to my site (I was getting a HTTP error).

My webhost recommended I change my file permissions, and I think did it correctly as they suggested.

However, I noticed gallery thumbnails were not displaying so I re-set the permissions as best as I could. Now the thumbnails are displaying but the images don’t go to a floating box they go a separate attachment page.

Also, my WordPress login bar has disappeared at the top of the page and dropped to the bottom. It all looks a bit of mess to be honest.

Also, I now can’t seem to upload any image now, I am getting an HTTP error for every image.

Sorry if I am not explaining myself very well. Hopefully there is something easy I am missing. Thanks for any pointers.

Try resetting permissions on all folders to 755 and on all files to 644.

Crikey, thanks for the prompt response. I didn’t put the numbers up because I thought it might be different for each host.

For info this is what they originally told me (just in case this thread will ever help anyone else):
“WordPress tries to set file permissions itself when files are uploaded from inside the WordPress interface. This can sometimes clash with the security in place on our Web Hosting Cluster resulting in the newly uploaded files being inaccessible to the web (page no found or access denied messages)

To prevent this from happening in future, all you need to do is ensure the permissions set on the upload folder is 775 (as opposed to 771 which it likely is currently). Once you have done this any files uploaded in future will upload with the correct file permissions (either 664 or 644).

To fix already uploaded files in the uploads folder that cannot be accessed, simply change their permissions from 660 to 664.”

I have swapped them to 755 and I’ll let you know how I get on. Many thanks.

The WordPress bar is back and the photos work again with the Nextgen Gallery.

The only thing still not working is uploading images. Any ideas? Ta.

Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 775. If you still have problems, try 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

Thanks again for your help Esmi.

I tried 775 and 777 but still no joy uploading through Media.

I’ve left it on 777 and tried uploading through Nextgen Gallery and whilst I still get an error, the image has uploaded.

    I still get an error

    What is the error message?

It’s slightly different than before, I’m getting this now…

That message to too generic to be of much use. Do you have access to your site’s error logs?
