• I’m having a problem backing up using skippy’s backup plug-in 1.7 that comes with WP 2.0. I created the backup folder and chmod it to 777. When I go to backup I get an error:

“The backup file could not be saved. Please check the permissions for writing to your backup directory and try again”.

I get this error regardless of whether I choose “save to server”, “download”, or “e-mail”

    Any thoughts?

  • What if you change permissions of wp-content to 777?

And your backup folder is something like backup-xxxxx where xxxxx is some characters?

BTW, the lastest version of WordPress, 2.0.5, is using a 1.8 version of the WordPress Backup Plugin

    (@austinandrew)

    wp-content is set to 777

    The backup folder is backup-xxxxx

I don’t see 1.8 on skippy’s site – can it be downloaded somewhere else?

    Thanks

I don’t think 1.8 will actually solve your problem, but 1.8 is part of the 2.0.5 distribution at http://wordpress.org/download/

I have the same problem, though I believe i’ve tried all suggestions I’ve found on this (in fact) brilliant forum. I have
    – checked and double-checked the permissions (777) and folder names. Anyhow, the ownor of the backup folder is set to apache, not my user name – but I’m not alowed to change it.
    – deleted the destination folder to force wp to make a new one, but that won’t work (seems to be a silly mistake, though no harm is done, I believe).
Still I get exactly the same error message.

Is it possible that the backup utility is sensible to choice of browser or OS? Any other suggestions?

(I’ve also checked with my ISP who couldn’t figure it out either.)
I’m using WP 2.0.5 via Firefox 2.0.0.1, Safari 2.0.4 and Opera 9.01 on OSX 10.4.8 – all in the latest versions)
    Thanks,
    Kjetil

    Solved
The problem was caused by wrong permissions on the backup folder. I could not change the owner name (from apache to dolcevita) through my ftp program, but after my ISP fixed it, backup has become of job that takes seconds.
