  • I’m running several wp blogs on my own virtual server running Ubuntu 8.10 hardy.

I’ve got the problem where I cannot use the auto upgrade or plugin install features.

If I set files to be owned by www-data (the owner of the Apache process) then auto upgrade and plugin installation work fine, but I cannot ftp anything. If I set the files to be owned by me, and with the www-data group, I get the ability to ftp, but auto upgrade breaks along with plugin installation, and I’ve also had issues with Apache not having access to things.

SELinux is disabled, so the ultimate solution described here didn’t work. He goes through the other things I’ve seen suggested, such as changing group ownership, or changing the owner of the Apache process, and states they all have problems.

I figure I’ve got something wrong somewhere, but I’m running out of ideas on how to get this working. People all over the earth can both ftp and have the auto update working…what have I got set wrong?

    Anyone have any ideas?
