Support » Fixing WordPress » permalinks with dots

  • Hi

Say you have a post called ‘what happened to bbc.co.uk’, and you have wordpress set up for permalinks. The permalink becomes ‘what-happened-to-bbccouk’. Notice its lost the ‘dots’ in ‘bbc.co.uk’.

Any ideas on how to prevent this? Or ways to get around this?

    thanks

  • Periods have meaning in URLs (indicating domains, subdomains, file formats), so they should not be used in page or post permalinks or directory names. Removing periods is the correct permalink behavior and I would not try to change it.

That’s a shame, I was about to hack it 🙂

But IMHO it would be nice to have functional consistency, e.g. if permalinks replace spaces with underscore, then it should do the same for dots, not just remove them.

It is consistent, in a sense. It removes anything not in a-z, 0-9, space, underscore, or dash. Then it replaces all whitespace with dashes.
