 * Hi
 * Extreme newbie alert!
    Before I install WordPress I’d like to find the best structure
   for my permalinks.
 * Firstly, does the structure effect anything apart from the permalink address/
   url?
 * I’d like to keep things as simple and clean as possible, so if I order by date
   I presume I can structure as
    **domain.com/2008/post-name/** rather than add
   month and day as well?
 * But if my blog is at
    **domain.com/blog** would this mean the permalink would
   have to be at **domain.com/blog/2008/post-name/**
 * The trouble is I may away at times and/ or not post for a while, so are there
   any alternatives to structuring by date?
 * I’ve seen some sites that have the clean structure
    **domain.com/post-name/**
   what is the disadvantage with this? Does it mean every post over the next 10
   years will have to have a unique name? Or other problems?
 * Many thanks for taking the time to help
 * Rob

 * The cleanest way that surely works is domain.com/post-id/postname. If you remove
   the id, the site might brake because stylesheets and pages no longer work. I’ve
   tried it and now I use what I wrote above.
    If you write a post with the same
   title, WP will add a number automatically, so there are no problems with that(
   and there wouldn’t be any anyway if the post-id is added).

 * Hi Gangleri
 * Thanks for your reply and tips.
    IS **post-id ** simply the number of the post
   i.e. 437?
 * I’ve done a quick search and some people are saying that not using the date in
   the structure messes up the calendar. Have you found this?
 * Can you see any problems if I just use the year for the structure?
    **domain.
   com/2008/post-name/**

 * I think using the post-id (unqiue number, if you delete a post that number is
   also deleted) is a good idea…
 * I tend to prefer the post-id permalink instead of the date, as i don’t update
   the blog too often. If you’re updating it often and daily then you can go for
   date.

 * Hi Rushhh
 * That does sound like a good solution Rushhh and Gangleri.
 * If you delete post #249, what happens to post #250?
    I presume it stays at #250
   and there is just a gap at post #249 (probably a 404?) or does post #250 now
   become #249?
 * Many thanks

 * _or does post #250 now become #249?_
 * No, it doesn’t. Once an ID is deleted nothing takes its place. If you have 999
   posts and delete them all, your next post will be #1000. That’s the nature of
   the database: the IDs are incremental.

 * Great, many thanks Moshu.
 * I also read that not using the date in the permalinks was only a problem with
   the calendar in WordPress v1.x.x, so is okay now.
 * IS there any disadvantage to using the ‘Post-Id’ instead of ‘date’ in the permalinks?
 * Many thanks
 * Rob
