# Permalinks Problem

 * I am trying to create permalinks that look like this: [http://www.parentingwithpleasure.com/postname](http://www.parentingwithpleasure.com/postname)
   like I have on my current site, raisingsmallsouls.com, for example: [http://www.raisingsmallsouls.com/everything-versus-something/](http://www.raisingsmallsouls.com/everything-versus-something/)
 * Under “permalinks” I put this into the “custom” field: /%postname%/ – and my 
   entite [http://www.parentingwithpleasure.com](http://www.parentingwithpleasure.com)
   site got messed up!
 * However, I was told to change my htaccess files- what are those and how do I 
   find them and do that?
 * Please help, thanks!!!

 * The .htaccess file is in the root directory, where index.php and wp-config.php
   are. What’s in it right now?

 * Well, is your server Windows-based or Linux-based? Windows machines using IIS
   won’t use the .htaccess file at all.

 * Ellen, I emailed you.
 * .htaccess is a file that needs to have a period before the filename. You may 
   not see it on your FTP program if these types of files are hidden.
 * Jon: the server looks like it’s running Apache, btw.
