# permalinks and shortcodes

 * Until recently, near the top of any page edit, there was a box providing a shortcode
   for the page.
    Under settings, permalinks, I selected the numeric selection.
 * Now, the permalink shows the full name of the page even though I selected the
   numeric selection, and no box for shortcodes.
 * Going back to earlier web sites, I am finding the same thing, so until corrected,
   I am assuming that this is related to version 4.4. If so, is there a plugin that
   will generate shortcodes for pages? I really liked using them.

 * You’re right that this was intentionally removed in WordPress 4.4 – shortlinks
   were primarily useful back when Twitter counted every character, these days they
   use their t.co URL shortener, so shortlinks are redundant.
 * To bring back the shortlink button, you just need to create a small plugin with
   this line of code:
 * `add_filter( 'pre_get_shortlink', '__return_false' )`

 * I have no experience with HTML, so I will have to do a bit of learning [not a
   bad thing] to be able to create a plugin, but thank you in any event.
