This is bizarre. WP is installed and works in a subdirectory–until I go to permalinks under settings. At first I thought I wiped out the site by changing them, but upon 2nd and 3rd tries, the installation STOPS WORKING as soon as I click on PERMALINKS under settings, before I even change options or save.

I am running WP on a larger site (which isn’t mine, but a client’s–i’m just doing the WP site), and after I go to the permalinks page, any link i click in the WP directory goes straight to the main site’s homepage.

I’ve fished around in the htacess but i cannot see what’s going on.

    What is happening?

    Thanks!

Yes, I already read that. It offered no explanation.

    Hello There,
Can i have a look at the site? May be get it touch, I am sure i can fix it asap.

    Niraj

Have you tried deleting/renaming the .htaccess file and letting WordPress generate a fresh one?

@kionae, yes, i tried this. thanks, though. what i find strange is that the site wipes out when a simply go to permalinks, rather than when I change an option and save.

@niraj, can i send you the link privately? (though now the installation isn’t even coming up). I’m not sure my client would like their site up on a forum. 🙂

    thanks!

    Here is the site: http://veneratedcoconut.com/2012/02/11/9e71-time-out/#comment-402

I’ve left the link in the comments so i can delete it. You see it’s going straight to the main site. I do think it’s the .htaccess but…

    thanks!

    More info:

When I go to permalinks, it’s changing the .htacesss file to this:

    # BEGIN WordPress

    # END WordPress

totally empty. is this a problem with the install or the larger site (which isn’t mine)? Can I write in the proper code for proper permalinks myself?

Should I be disturbed the installation is acting this way??

    thanks

When you say “the installation STOPS WORKING” do you mean:
    1. That specific single admin page does not load
    2. The whole site, including the whole front end and all the backend admin pages stop working?

And by ‘stops working’ do you mean:
    1. You get errors
    2. You get blank pages
    3. No errors, but it looks wrong (colours, sizes, fonts, images)

stops working = “after I go to the permalinks page, any link i click in the WP directory goes straight to the main site’s homepage.”

WP is installed in the subdirectory of a larger site, which isn’t mine/my charge. As soon as i go to permalinks in WP, the WP disappears and goes to the main site (public html/root directory). I can get it back by rewriting the htaccess, but that doesn’t change the permalinks issue.

    1. That specific single admin page does not load – no, it does not
    2. The whole site, including the whole front end and all the backend admin pages stop working? the whole WP site does not load, but the main site (not wp) does.
