Permalinks & .htaccess

I have mod_rewrite on my server. I selected to create permalinks using the wordpress option of date and name based permalink. Then wordpress came me some code to input into my .htaccess file and it asked me to update it (.htaccess), did that. My CHMOD is set to 755. Is that the correct way to setup your permalink structure and mod_rewrite for it to work?
