 * I was trying to change my Permalinks to show the topic instead of random numbers(
   default). It told me:
 * `If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it
   isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file.
   Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.`
 * So I go hunt down my .htaccess file, yes I know it is hidden, but it wasnt there
   at all. So I created one, it enabled me to save, but when I go click on one of
   my post on the website it says that that page is not available. If I change the
   permalink back to default, then everything is ok.
 * What am I doing wrong?

 * Delete the .htaccess file you created and then chmod wp-content to 777. Set up
   your new permalinks and when that is complete, reset the permissions on wp-content
   back to 755.

 * Thanks for the reply. I just did what you said to do, I still get same error
   messages:
 * `If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it
   isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file.
   Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.`

 * Set the htaccess-file to 666 oder 777 and then save the Permalink paramters a
   new time.
 * Edit the htaccess-file manually, if autosave fails.
 * Don’t forget to set the htaccess-file back to 644.

 * Sorry Tillo, but the .htacces file doesn’t even show up, anywhere in my wordpress
   files. I had to manually create it, chmod, as well as manually edit it. Same
   problem happens as set above in my previous post.
 * This is the part where I am not understanding, everywhere I look online I get
   the same solutions some reported to work as well as others that don’t.

 * Hi,
 * .htaccess file should be in domain if your domain is hosted on Linux environment…
   however check for the htaccess file for your domain and if it not there then
   create it and assign 766 permissions..add your htaccess code and save it..
 * Also upgrade your wordpress to the latest version and disable all unwanted plugins..
 * Thanks,
 * Shane G.

 * hi, try this:
 * 1) open a notepad doc.
    2) don’t put anything in it just save it as .htaccess
   3) upload to root (public_html) and cmod it to 777 (right click it, select file
   attributes and click all the boxes)
 * simples 🙂
 * hope it helps
