# “Edit Permalink” button replaced by “Change Permalinks” button

 * I am using the latest version of WordPress that is installed on a Webnames.ca
   host. I’m using Ocean WP theme.
 * I have created a number of pages (not posts, but pages), that were automatically
   set up with permalinks ending with numbers like “/?page_id=30”. However, I need
   to change these to custom ones, such as “/about”, “/contact”, etc.
 * After researching how to do this, I went to edit the page with WordPress Editor,
   and clicked on the title of the page. Above the title appears the permalink, 
   but instead of the “Edit Permalink” button, there is the “Change Permalinks” 
   that redirects to the settings page that deals with the permalink structure for
   posts (not what I need: I need to change permalinks to specific pages).
 * I read that I need to save the draft, and then the “Edit Permalink” button will
   appear. I tried multiple times saving the draft, going from published to draft,
   saving the draft and so on, bu in neither case did the “Edit Permalink” button
   appear.
 * Would very much appreciate help on this.

 * My understanding is that WordPress has an internal Rewrite Engine that is dormant
   when your URLs are set to ‘plain’ (the numeric parameter is parsed). Right now
   you don’t have permalinks enabled so WordPress is asking you to turn on or create
   your first Pretty Permalinks.
 * Then it should let you edit those. In a way, it’s telling you that you “can’t
   edit what doesn’t exist’ yet.
 * Sometimes WordPress isn’t as intuitive as it should be but when you ask questions
   like this then that input sometimes makes it back into the next version. Other
   times you just ‘go with the flow’ and wind up where you need to be even though
   the wording isn’t clear or seems to be counter to what you need/want to do.

 * Ah, thanks a lot, that solved it!
    I went to Settings and Permalinks, and instead
   of “Plain” selected “Day and Name”.
 * Now not only the “Edit” button appeared, but each page has neatly changed its
   URL to match its title automatically.
 * Ironically, I spent half a day reading about this on the internet, and nowhere
   did it say that the settings should be changed from “plain” to one of the other
   options in order for it to work. It would be great if this could be added to 
   the official WP manual.
