I read the using permalinks doc but im still confused. what is the actual base of the permalink. Is it a folder I make in the ftp and upload content to, or can I control the permalink from the wp admin, and if that's the case, where is it?

ok now that i know how to change the structure. Thanks but that didn't answer my question like I thought it would. I'm wondering does it work like this. Do you make a page and permalink to it? or do you make a file and upload it then permalink it.

Set the permalink structure the way you want, ie, year, category, post title. that's it.

Once it's set, your post's permanlink becomes, http://www.mysite.com/blog/2005/stories/story-title, versus
    http://www.mysite.com/blog/?p=45 (or something like that).
    Otherwise, you do nothing.
    Pages become mysite.com/blog/about, etc.
take a closer look at the codex article that macmanx posted.

  5. im_so_lost, I think you're a little bit confused as to what "permalinks" are in this scenario. This should help:

last problem i promise. It seems that i can't have dashes in the permalink url. Is there a reason why?

    http://corefx.net/wordpress/about/ - is accessable
    http://corefx.net/wordpress/about-corefx/ - is not accessable

  8. Dashes should be just fine in the permalinks. What permlaink rule are you using?

And about-corefx is the slug for the page you created?

    Note on using only %postname%
If you use postname as the only element in your permalinks to create a structure such as myblog.com/post-title, the rewrite rules may make it impossible to access pages such as your stylesheet (which has a similar format) or the wp-admin folder

From the codex article that macmanx posted, Using Permalinks.
Not sure if that could be the issue, but worth checking out.

  13. If you have /http:/www.corefx.net/wordpress/%postname%/ in the "Structure" field at Options/Permalinks, that is incorrect. /http:/www.corefx.net/wordpress is not part of your permalink structure. The allowed tags are listed here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks What you want is simply: /%postname%/

Please, get some rest, read all of the instructions again, and try again.
