I have tried to figure out the performance impact of multi-site but most blogs just claim it has no impact. However forwarding can’t be free right?

Has anyone actually tested the performance impact of using this approach? E.g. how much latency get’s added by the plugin doing redirection?

Redirecting by any method adds a delay to the request. That delay occurs in the client (browser) which has to do a second DNS lookup & URL request. The reason you aren’t seeing any the performance testing you are describing is that regardless of method the main delay is in the client.
