First, I apologize that I’m a novice at coding and thank you guys in advance for any help.

I have roughly 200 pdf files of music that I have written. I’m trying to find a way to organize the files (maybe alphabetically by title) so that a person with access to the page can quickly find songs to download and rehearse. My goal is to have them pull up a chart and have some type of audio player available to play while following along on the pdf.

I have this code so far

    [mla_gallery mla_viewer=true size=none post_mime_type=application/pdf columns=6 link=file post_parent=all attachment_category=’groove-charts’]

The first problem is that when I click on the pdfs that pull up, it redirects me to my home page. I would like it to open up a large verson of the pdf or give the option to print.

The second problem is that once I load in all of the charts, It will be difficult for the user to find a chart.

Each song has multiple parts for example
    song1 (song1saxophone, song1guitar, song1lyrics) mp3
    song2 (song2bass, song2piano, song2lyrics) mp3

Thanks for your question and all the details about your application. Thanks as well for posting the full shortcode text and a link to your site (great site!); very helpful. For a “coding novice” you have made a lot of progress.

Regarding your first problem, your shortcode looks fine and should be working just as you described. I copied your shortcode to my system and it does indeed open up the PDF document when you click on a thumbnail image.

On your site, the href= parameter in the links is empty, which is why you get the home page. This is some kind of MLA bug, I think, but I cannot reproduce it on my system.

Could you try your shortcode with mla_viewer=false and see if you still have the problem? That would help me narrow down the possible cause of the bug. If it still happens, there may be another plugin involved – what other plugins are running on your site?

Regarding your second problem, I’m not sure I understand what “find a chart” means. Can you say more about this problem?

Thanks for your patience and any additional information you can provide. I regret that you’re having trouble with the [mla_gallery] shortcode that is not your fault.

    Thanks for the quick response.

    caldera forms
    css hero
    google calendar events
    mailchimp lite
    MLA
    woocommerce
    wp edit
    wp smush
    xml sitemap and google news
    youtube

I tried mla_viewer=false and it turned the pdf thumbnail into long grey boxes with no link attached.

Regarding the second problem, if there are 200 songs, and every song has 2-7 parts to the song, I need a way for the user to easily scroll through and find the song, then find the part. Almost seems like I need a tab system or something that expands. I definitely know this is reaching outside of the MLA plug but any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I just had another look at your site and now the links behind the thumbnails are going to the “attachment page” for the documents. This is progress – are you still experimenting?

First problem is resolved. I disabled the plugins one by one and wp edit was the culprit. Now the links are working.

Is there a way to open the attachment in a new window. I have to keep the site on the main page to keep the audio player intact.

Yea! Thanks for the good news and for your tedious plugin-disabling diagnostic work.

You can use the mla_target parameter to get the results you want. For example, if you code mla_target="_blank" the item will open in a new window or tab.

Regarding your second problem, you may be able to adapt the ideas from this recent topic:

Only Show Tags from Specific Attachments in Specific Categories

Or something from this earlier topic:

Show main category with list inside

I am marking this topic resolved, but if you need help with your second problem you can update this topic or (better) start a new topic. Thanks for working with me on your first problem and for your interest in the plugin.

I finally resolved the mla_target=”_blank” issue. As you have stated in multiple other posts, you CANNOT use the (visual) portion of the text editor as it will alter the code causing errors.

So my code as of now is as follows
    [mla_gallery mla_viewer=true size=none post_mime_type=application/pdf columns=6 post_parent=all attachment_category=’groove-charts’ link=file mla_target=”_blank”]

Issues that I resolved that may help others

    1. always enter the shortcode in the text port and not the visual portion as mentioned above

    2. the attachment_category= has to be filled in with the slug name of the category

    3. link=file can possibly be affected by other plugs (in my case wp edit)

I have other questions and ideas that I will start another topic on. Thank you for all your help.

Thanks for your update and the tips based on your experience; all of the items you mentioned are good reminders!

I have added code to MLA that looks for and tries to repair the “improvements”/damage caused by the Visual editor tab, but it does not always work.

Interactions among plugins can affect [mla_gallery] in many sometimes mysterious ways. Lightbox and slideshow plugins are often a problem because they modify anything that looks like a gallery item. That’s one price we pay for such a rich WordPress ecosystem.

I look forward to your other questions and ideas. Thanks for your interest in the plugin.
