If you’re hosting WordPress elsewhere, you’re using the WordPress.org software, which is free.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.org/support/article/wordpress-vs-wordpress-com/
Amazing James, thank you so much for the info. Yes I read that article but it didn’t answer my specific query so your help is much appreciated. One thing though, as I was waiting for the update I live chatted with the wordpress.com team. They say you need the wordpress.com plan even if you have a domain registered with another provider and just want to use a wordpress.org theme… so I guess you are sure as sure can be on this one, right? Thanks again, Justin š

Is your site actually hosted with another provider or just the domain?
I read your original question. The answer is NO.
If you download a WordPress.org theme, you can use it on your domain on another server. I guess that means you’re using WordPress installed on your server and not WordPress.com – hence you don’t necessarily need a WordPress.com plan.
@justinreddin is also asking where you’re hosting your site – your provider?
This is because there are several possibilities:
- You can register your domain anywhere and still use a WordPress.com plan for hosting
- You can register your domain with WordPress.com and use a WordPress.com plan
- You can register your domain and hosting anywhere and still use WordPress.org software
The key is to understand the differences.
I hope this clears up your questions.
Thanks
