Payment Error Ocurred

I have multiple customers who are getting this error despite trying multiple payment options. We are using Square gateway for payments but due to this issue have added a Paypal option which has worked every time someone has used it.

“An error occurred, please try again or try an alternate form of payment.” I’m only in my fifth week of business but about 25% of customers are seeing this issue and are unable to pay for their orders. People whose cards do work and are able to save on file seem to be able to process every time.

Hi @chefpatricia

Thank you for posting here on the Square forum.

I understand that you now have the SSL certificate, have updated the Square plugin (disconnected and reconnected) and debug is enabled, but the error is still occurring. Did the recent error happen for a customer or when you tested to see if you could reproduce the error?

Can you please provide us with the most recent error log from the transaction that did not go through with Square.

The issue is still occurring. We had a customer with the issue on Nov. 11th. One customers purchase went through just fine. One customers didn’t. The log shows the customer that worked but doesn’t show the customer that didn’t. I do see this though at the top of the error log. The only thing in the log that looks odd. We did just find out yesterday that a customer who had this issue last week we sent an invoice to directly through squareup.com and they paid it and saved their card on file. Once the car was on file, for this weeks order it did process just fine through the website/woocommerce. So possibly as long as the card is on file it works, but new customers have an issue until we workaround the website to get a card on file. Not sure if that helps.

Hi Chef Patricia,

Thanks for the error logs, with these nonce errors it typically means something on the site is interfering with what card info and other data that’s being sent to Square.

A first step then would to be to try and rule out any other plugins or your theme on the site from causing this issue. We’d recommend changing to the default Twenty Seventeen or Storefront theme and then trying again.

If that doesn’t help, you’ll want to check for plugins by disabling all plugins, except for WooCommerce and the WooCommerce Square. 🙂

Hi Ryanr14 !

Based on reading your last comment in this thread I began to deactivate plugins 1 by 1 on a clients site and tested out a purchase after each deactivation. Turns out it was the SEO-All-In-One plugin that was causing the issue. My clients logs also showed the “Payment nonce is missing” error which lead me to this thread. After deactivating the SAIO plugin the payments are processing normally. Is there another SEO plugin that will not interfere with this plugin? I’m not sure which features of the SE0-All-In-One plugin are causing the issue, but I’d sure love to find out. This is the very first time we’ve run into this issue in 2 years. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi @indigodove,

Good work finding the cause. I think if the clients site, or client/you, are familiar and like using that plugin it’d be ideal to report the issue to their team.

When this sort of thing happens with payment methods it is usually a JavaScript error or something that loads over HTTP instead of HTTPS, which for good reason scares the payment processor since it’s not secure. 🙂

Nonetheless, the other big player in the SEO plugin space would be Yoast but like I said it should be something that the All in One SEO team could help fix quicker than you switching and redoing your SEO setup in another plugin.

@amandasjackson I will absolutely do that, I was unavailable yesterday to work on it due to a private catering job but I am going to research that and try some of the suggestions today as I’ve never done any of this before. I will keep you posted.
