In the past I had to spend a lot of time removing smart quotes and similar things before I could paste articles on the internet.

Do I still have to do what with WordPress, or can I leave them in? It looks like they are displaying correctly in the browser, but I don’t know if that will always be the case.

    Thanks.

WordPress will do its best to translate content pasted from Word, but that in and of itself is the problem, it’s a translation.

WordPress is an HTML editor, while Word is a proprietary rich text editor. Not only are the two essentially two different languages, but part of Word’s language is not publicly available. So, while WordPress can translate some elements of that perfectly, others will be “best guess only.”

If you want to write posts offline in an application, we recommend that you try a blogging client instead: https://codex.wordpress.org/Weblog_Client#List_of_Client_Software
