The majority of my podcast is protected content via Podbean. For the past 5 years it’s worked flawlessly. Subscribers can play protected content in the PowerPress player after entering their username and password. The same with downloading.
Recently, all protected content stopped asking for the username and password and is no longer playable. I as well as Podbean have checked the URLs out in other environments and it works as it always has.
You can still download after entering your username and password – you just can’t play or preview the episode.
I’ve tried rolling back several versions of PowerPress with no luck. I’ve tried standard troubleshooting issues and even deactivating all my plugins sans PowerPress still didn’t resolve the issue.
This issue began shortly after a recent fix with PowerPress was issued. It’s not clear if the two are related but has become a source of irritation for subscribers. I waited to hear back from Podbean who tested it in various environments as did I with no issues. It just appears to be through the PowerPress plugin.
I’ll begin testing it with their player and the Castos player shortly but I’m stumped. Because this is a protected feed – the only thing that can be imported is the free content I provide. Nevertheless, I need to see for certain whether or not it’s limited to PowerPress or perhaps something in my host that changed that I’m not aware of.
Keep in mind, the password protected downloads still work as usual – it’s just the playback option that’s not working when it always has.
One other thing – I do not use the Memberpress plugin or anything of that nature. Everything is password protected on Podbean’s end and has never been an issue.
