Support » Fixing WordPress » Password Issues with WP-config

  • I have migrated my site (where I host WordPress) to a new server and changed the DNS. I can access the site but not the wordpress directory nor is my blog accessible by anyone.

I assume I need to edit wp-config.php, which I have tried in many configurations. I changed the name listings to fit the new one. But the password thing has me flummoxed.
In the wp-config I downloaded after I could not see the blog and it was a bunch of gibberish, numbers and words. I assume WordPress generated that?

I changed it to the new password. No luck. Changed the new password back to the old one. No luck.

(I am assuming my WordPress version as I can’t find where I can see what it is)

    Help.

    2. Don’t assume – just read the documentation: Moving_WordPress

Thank you (and sorry to be so inept at this), but that document doesn’t answer my need. I need to change my wp-config file correctly (as indicated in the document when moving the blog with the same domain to a new server). The old config had the ID that I use to FTP into my own site, where I host my blog, so I changed the new one to the FTP ID for the new site. The old one had a password made up of random letters et al (which I did not create). I tried using that password. I tried using the actual password for the new domain location. I tried using my old password for the domain which worked. I tried using my ID and password to log into my blog itself. In none of those instances did the blog do anything but post an error message suggesting that there was a problem with the config file in lieu of the home page. I am stymied.

PS: Unless I am now thoroughly confused (I’ve done all this stuff over and over, back and forth), the only ID that allows me to access the cpanel for the new server is the one I use for FTPing. Don’t know of if that tells you anything or not.

    You are simply mixing things…
    1. there is user/pw combo from your host – for administering the whole site
    2. there is FTP user/pw; on many hosts this is the same as #1
    3. there is a user/pw for the database – that can NOT be the same on two hosts!
    4. there is your WordPress blog’s user/pw – normally “admin” and a passwrod – now that should be the same even after the move!

Out of all the above combos in the wp-config file you need #3. Plus, the name of the database on the new host server and the server/host.
All the rest is irrelevant when moving WP.

And yes, that document I linekd to, has ALL the information you need. Just have to read it. Read it more times, if necessary…

Oh, and is this about the blog linked to your profile here? That one works.

No, this about a blog I run on my own website. I assume the profile links to the one on WordPress itself. For some other odd reason, while I an access my dashboard from WordPress and log on to administer my site, when I use my name and password to try and access the forums, it is not recognized, so I log in with this one. The dashboard of the affected site is also accessible from the dashboard of the site now on WordPress as well.

Just to be clear: I set up a new user name and password for the database by editing the wp-config file and that will solve the issue?
