Lets suppose you are going to make a partial refund, Woocommerce logs that partial refunds but keep the order status the same, the order should go to refund automatically, its not going. Even worse, if you try to send it manually to refunded after making the partial refund, it will log another refund with the total remaining, so the partial refund becomes a full refund.

How to make Woocommerce send partial refund order to status “Refunded” without it automatically logging a full refund?

    Hello @an0nimo,

Lets suppose you are going to make a partial refund, Woocommerce logs that partial refunds but keep the order status the same, the order should go to refund automatically, its not going.

When issuing a partial refund, the order status will not be changed. The order status will only change if it’s a full refund and has to be via the payment method, not manually.

You can read more about this here: https://woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-refunds/#automatic-refunds

You can change the status manually to refunded after missing a partial refund.

If I do what you’ve said it will refund the remaining value as the screenshot below:

I did a refund for 399.90, the status remained the same, so Ive manually changed order status to Refunded and Woocommerce automatically gave a refund for remaining value of 733.60 🙁

    Hi @an0nimo

Firstly, I would like to ask why are you making a manual refund on your site.

Please note that this does not refund the customer via the payment gateway. Continue on to your payment gateway’s dashboard to start the refund process there, or transfer the money manually back to them.

Furthermore, if you could share what payment gateway was used for this order as well?

I replicated the scenario on my personal site issuing partial refunds, however, I am not able to reproduce the issue on my end. For this order, the payment gateway used was Direct Bank Transfer, hence, I am doing a manual refund here.

On my first refund, the status is still Completed.

Then, I went ahead to make the full refund, changing the status from Completed to Refunded.

Im using PayPal for Brazil to refund.

@xue28 try to only make a partial refund and then change the status to Refunded, it will refund automatically the remaining value, thats the behavior that it should not have.

    Hi @anonymized-16110023

Thanks for your confirmation of the payment gateway used for this order.

Since this is a third-party plugin which we don’t provide support for (please see our Support Policy here), it would be best reaching out to the plugin’s developers for further assistance here.

All the best and hopefully, the issue will be fixed soon.

As I did on my reply above, I already created a partial refund and the status is not changed to Refunded, it is still Completed. The status will only be autoamtically changed once I make a full refund.

Can you please share why are you changing the status manually to Refunded?

    Howdy! 👋

Just chiming in to say that’s expected behavior. Switching an order status to refund, regardless of the status or whether a partial refund has been previously submitted, will refund the total cost of the order.

A partially refunded order is not considered refunded due to the pending amount, so the status will remain unchanged until a full refund has been issued.

If you would like to see an additional order status called partially refunded on WooCommerce, you can submit your feature request following these steps.

    Have a good one.
