    Hi Annie,

Is there anyway we can close forum on this subject? If anything new, we can start on new thread?

    Tks & Rgds,
    Lee

    Hi Lee,

    I feel your pain!

Here are some tips/links for backups and good plugins.

While searching for plugins, always look if that plugin has active support ( go to their support forums, Look at its reviews. look how often it gets updates and when was the last update.

Here is a list of plugin I often use and have good experience with:

    https://managewp.com/
This is an awesome tool and even the free version is a blessing.
You can add your site and it saves 1 backup a month for free, which you can restore with one click.
You can easely overview and update plugins and more for free. If you want more backups you can get a paid plan, but having one backup is better then no backup right?

Here you see a video how this works:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRPbJvNgmZ4

Here is another video about it: https://youtu.be/C5nBQJQIfH4

Hope this helps and wishing you good luck with starting over!

    Annie

PS: As a topic starter you should see the option to close this topic?

Oh yes always use a child theme!
Good one here for free for Storefront: http://www.pootlepress.com/shop/free-blank-woothemes-storefront-child-theme/

Not sure what is happening but after I post its gone….not sure if this will end up in double postings…

Another great free plugin is WP All in one migration

Another must have ( in my opinion ) is a premium plugin for awesome customizations for Storefront theme without having to touch code yourself is: http://www.pootlepress.com/shop/storefront-pro/

Security plugins free and very good in my opninion:
    Wordfence and Sucuri

    Hi Annie,

Many thanks for your several advises. Sorry for late reply as I was thinking hard on how and what to restart. Anyway, I had started a little and will make some changes.

I’m impressed with those plugins you introduced. They are new to me so I went through several times to understand more. Since I’m just starting out (again), I shall install the free plugin. Only until such time that my site is in progress, I shall upgrade them to premium. Updates for you:

    1. I had signed up for Manage WP Orion. Once my site is fully set up, I shall get started with Orion. Can I also connect to Google Analytics/Search Console though it works similar?
    2. Yes, I received your posting of WP All in one migration earlier thus the latest is a duplicate. Anyway, I watched the video twice and shall install later. That will save me lots of time in copying each file into WP page.
    3. I had installed iThemes Security earlier but had it deleted and replaced with Wordfence Security. I guess it works quite similar but Wordfence has been updated 6 days ago with over a million download. It has a unique protection for my site being hacked.
    4. I had earlier installed “Simple CSS”. Do I still have to install the Storefront child theme or both?

I shall get back to you again if I do experience problems in setting up my site.

    Rgds,
    Lee

    Hi Lee,

    Glad it helps!

Please do not just start taking backups as soon as your shop is fully set up!
Keep in mind you can always lose all your work, better create a backup each time you made new changes.

Most of the plugins I refer to are free and most of the time even the free versions are good enough.
Only the storefront PRO is only available in premium, but boy does that offer options to customize your shop without having to touch code ( and not mess up things while trying 🙂 )

    CHILDTHEMES:

If you find yourself changing the entire color scheme, moving things around in the CSS, etc, then you definitely should consider using a child theme. You can use a child theme also to add speed optimizations etc.

    I always use a childtheme. See: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

Please remember that if the parent theme needs to be updated, first switch from your active child theme to the parent theme ( it needs to be activated ) before you update. Otherwise your customizations will get overwritten.

Always have a backup ( All in one migration for example ) before doing any update. If things go south you can revert back.

    ALL IN ONE MIGRATION:

This is a backup tool, not a tool to copy files into a wordpress page!

    Google Analytics/Search Console

Manage WP Orion has a premium feature to add an view you Google analytics in their dashboard. If you already have a google analytics account, you can always log in there and look at the statistics for free. If you had connected to your Analytics account before, you will know how to connect it again in this new install.

Re child themes: For what its worth, I have never reactivated the parent theme during a parent theme update and I have never lost my child theme customizations.

    Hi Corbett,

    Interesting!
I was told years ago when starting to use child themes, that I first needed to deactivate the child theme and activate the parent. Then update the parent and after that is done, switch back to the child.

I have been updating this way for years and never tested if customizations were lost.
That would make it a lot easier to update. I tried to find that advice again but no luck so far!

    Could it be outdated advice…

    Thanks for the tip!

    Hi Annie,

    1. Ooops! sorry I got the wrong concept of All In One Migration. To be safer, I shall backup my contents there, in hosting cpanel and copy the contents into my hard drive. A massive punch on my head as a lesson from my silly mistake.
    2. Appreciate your contents of child and parent theme. The child theme will be installed later and in future, rectified any changes here. I will not meddle with parent theme.
    3. After much effort and time, I had now published a static page for my site and rectified the footer through Simple CSS. The other contents is in progress. Can you teach me on how to remove the “view the shopping cart + $0” from right of header?

    Many thanks,
    Lee

    Hi Lee,

    MIGRATION:
No problem, its a lot of information!

    CHILD THEMES:
If you are planning to use a child theme, I would recommend you do it right from the start. If you are making css changes like the footer and cart while the parent is active, and you later switch to the child, you will have to do that again….

    CSS CHANGES CART ETC:
I would highly recommend to invest a few dollars ( $49.00 ) in the Storefront PRO extention:http://www.pootlepress.com/shop/storefront-pro/

Things like removing the shopping cart are done with one click and you do not need to worry and waste time searching to do it manually ( and maybe mess things up… ).

By the way, why would you want to remove the shopping cart in header, comes very handy in a shop?
Might consider not using a busy patern in the background image, it makes the menu and cart items hard to see?

    Hi Annie,

Sorry for late reply. I was waiting for you but I didn’t realize your mail got into SOCIAL column which I hardly ever open. Only yesterday when I was getting in to delete all mails, then I saw your reply. Anyway thanks for connecting. My site is still under construction. Lots to meddle, slowly learning.

As per your advise, I shall create the child theme and rectify there. I went through before but very technical for me. No matter how, I will need to study hard on how to install. Later I shall upgrade to Storefront Pro. I also need a mentor and invest some money to run my site smoothly. Tks for the Pootlepress introduction of Storefront Pro. Lots for me to tackle, lol.

The cart is not necessary in my page as once the buyer buys a shirt, it is available in Sunfrog platform. You are right as the header image looks busy. I was overwhelmed when I restarted. I will source for a simplier replacement.

I did some modification with the help from GTMetrix result. At least page load is running at 2.6s with 90% page speed now. Do you think this is right? More progress soon!

    Many thanks for your help,
    Lee

    Hi Lee,

    No problem!

    CHILD THEME:

Easiest way for you is just to download it here:
    http://www.pootlepress.com/shop/free-blank-woothemes-storefront-child-theme/

Then upload that zip file in your dashboard – themes ( just like you would upload any other theme )
Then activate that child theme and you are good to go!

    PAGE LOAD:
Recommended is to have a page load under 1 second.
I use this plugin ( very easy to use ):https://nl.wordpress.org/plugins/simple-cache/
    Just install, activate and go!

    STOREFRONT PRO:
This is not an “upgrade” it is a third party extention that once installed and activated, will add lots of cool options in the customizer.
