Support » Fixing WordPress » Parent theme manual updating with child theme

  • Hello everybody,

I have a main theme and a child theme installed. I need to update the theme, but I can only do it manually (it’s this only available option for this particular theme). Can you confirm the operations I’m going to do are correct and safe?

    1. Backup files and database
    2. Delete the parent theme from the theme folder on the server
    3. Copy and paste the new version of the parent theme in the theme folder on the server
    4. Test it

So I leave the child theme in my theme folder on the server. And even if I have a child theme folder in the new theme package I don’t have to use it. Am I right?

    Thanks in advance!

  • That is correct. As long as you leave your child folder untouched, your changes won’t get overwritten.

Although usually it’s plenty if you just copy over the new version of the parent theme (so without deleting the previous).

    You are correct.
I would do something slightly different, rather than deleting the parent theme, I would rename its directory, anything would do but “old-parentTheme” is natural, then I would install the updated parent theme files.
This way you can easily flip between parent versions by renaming their directories.

    Thank you guys!!
