If you posted the actual error message, there is a backslash that shouldn’t be there at the end of the parent theme name.
check the directory name of the parent theme. It should be custom-community
(looking at the error you gave).

The backslash (\) is not something I typed in. I don’t know why it is looking for it with a \. In the child theme style.css I have custom-community with no \.
It might help if you posted the lines of your style.css that refer to the parent theme. Be sure to enclose them in backticks.

Here’s the style.css
/*
Theme Name: custom-community-child
Theme URI: http://shoproostertails.com/
Description: Child Theme for Custom Community
Author: Andrew
Author URI: http://shoproostertails.com/
Template: custom-community
Version: 1.8.9.1
*/
@import url(“../custom-community/style.css”);
Like you, I don’t see anything wrong with that.
Does ‘Custom Community’ show up in the Admin->Themes page?

I figured it out. It was my Text Editor on my Mac. It was using Rich Text format instead of Plain Text.
