Parent category and sub-category 'description' issues

Hi all,

I am having trouble displaying the description of a category (<?php echo category_description(); ?>) on the archive page (archive.php). I am using this code:

The title is referring to the correct category but the description always refers to the parent category.

Furthermore, when on an archive page of a sub-category, the ‘Edit Category’ link in the Admin Bar links to the settings for the parent category. How can the subcategories and categories be distinguished from one another?
