This is a known problem in WP. Can be fixed by enabling the “Stop removing the P and BR tags…” checkbox in the advanced settings.

That doesn’t help, and in fact makes it worse, as ‘paragraph returns’ in the visual editor result in blank lines in the html editor.
What I mean by paragraph returns is what happens when I type with the ‘return’ key on a mac. This does not result in a <p></p> in the html editor, but a blank line.
This is warned against in the ‘Stop removing…’ setting: “…in particular do not use empty lines”
Having turned it on all the text is in one block.

I’ll just have use tables as little as possible

<b> </b> Seems to survive switching between visual editor and html editor, and updating.

This happens when the “Stop removing the P and BR tags…” checkbox in not checked. It is the default behaviour. When this checkbox is checked, the P tags are not removed in the Text editor.

This does not result in a <p></p> in the html editor, but a blank line.

Of course! The Text editor is a simple textarea. It accepts only text input. If you need any HTML tags, including <p>, you will have to type them yourself.

Whatever. If I check the “Stop removing P and BR tags…” etc I get unformatted blocks of text in all posts which is a disaster and unusable. This needs a proper fix.
