pan instead of crop thumbnails
-
Hello, can I achieve that previews (thumbnails) are not cropped, but panned to fit into standard format? – So I do not loose any image content and, e.g. get a margin top and bottom if the image is landscape format.
The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Hi @herrdeh
The page you have shared does not contain a gallery created using FooGallery. If possible, please share a link containing the gallery you are referring to. If not, then kindly let me know the FooGallery template you are using to display the images in the gallery before I can advise further on this. Thanks in advance for the clarification.
Kind regards,
Elvis.Hello, thanks for taking care. I made my first attempts on this page http://sentaminzlaff.de/auf-reisen-hw/, using the “responsive gallery” template.
Problem with this (artistic) paintings is, that they do not have a standard height/width-ratio – and that they must not be cropped.
Hi @herrdeh
Thanks for getting back to me with that update.
When using the Responsive Gallery template, FooGallery gives you an option to set up the width and height that the thumbnail images displayed on the page will have. This is shown in this linked image: https://prnt.sc/hGY-sfjf8PD4
Kindly set this up to your preferred width and height and once you save/update the gallery, it will apply to all of the paintings displayed in your responsive gallery.
Thanks.
Kind regards,
Elvis. Thanks for your support. My settings are the same as yours are. To make clear what I need, I added two more images:
- one narrow rectangle – much higher than wide (portrait ratio)
- 2nd wide rectangle – much wider than high (landscape ratio)
Both look the same in preview – a square. This is because they are cropped. But when you look at them in the lightbox, you see that they are completely different.
What I need is that I can recognize both in the thumbnails – so margins must be added. How can I achieve this?
I’m fine with square thumbnails, this is not the issue.
Thanks a lot in advance, Wolf

Hi @herrdeh
As I mentioned earlier if you want to adjust the thumbnail dimensions, you will need to edit the “Thumbnail Link” height and width value. The values set will be applied to all images, so all of the thumbnails will have the same height and width set up.
In your case, I’d encourage you to try out the Justified Gallery template instead, and what you’ll need to adjust is the “Row Height” and “Maximum Row Height”.
Kind regards,
Elvis.Well It seems you don’t understand what I need, and it seems that FooGallery cannot deliver it out of the box.
Anyway – thanks for trying !
Hi @herrdeh
After conducting another thorough review of your request, I’m happy to inform you that I have been able to identify how your desired image cropping can be accomplished using the Responsive Image Gallery template you’re currently utilizing.
Here are the steps to implement this:
- Go to the Edit page of the gallery in question.
- Navigate to the “Advanced” section.
- Under “Thumbnail Cropping,” select “Background Fill (No crop).” and your preferred background fill color, as demonstrated in this linked image: Thumbnail No Crop Option.
These adjustments will modify how thumbnails are cropped, aligning with your requirements, and offering the choice to specify a background fill color. For your reference, here’s a preview of a gallery with these options enabled: Gallery Preview.
Please be aware that this feature is currently only available in the FooGallery Pro Expert plan and above. Best regards,
ElvisI have a similar issue, I think.
I’m also using Responsive, and I want all the thumbnails to be the same dimensions, but no cropping of the images. I have achieved the latter with your help, but the thumbnails want to vary in size, only sometimes, based on the image dimensions. Which can give some odd results. The sample gallery is here: https://rpgmapshare.com/fantasy-mapping-objects/gallery/fantasy-miscellaneous/
If you scroll down, you’ll see what I mean. I’ve changed the thumbnail size to try and get them to resize to all the same, but it doesn’t work.
