[Resolved] Pagination on top level categories lead to 404

    @katandmouse

    Wow. I see this is a recurring problem over the last at least couple of years. I could not find a solution. Other posts were closed so I have to open yet another one.

    Here’s my problem site: vanillawp.katandmouse.com
    Select a top level category like Recipes and try to go to page 2. But select Desserts and you’ll be able to go to page 2 just fine. Permalinks does not work on the top level.

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks for any help I can get!

    @katandmouse

    I just figured it out! Had me stumped for weeks. We imported about 600 posts from a Joomla site and in those there were some subcategories that had the same name but nested under different parents such as “travel” under “book reviews” (travel book reviews) and “travel” under “sites we support” (travel websites). I cleaned up the duplicates by renaming them and all is well!

    I post this here for the benefit of others and to hopefully spare some agony.

    I’m not sure if this could happen by adding categories by hand (we imported them), but if it can, WP should not allow duplicates.
