Pages not validating - looks like hell in IE (8 posts)

Now in FF it looks fine, however, when trying to validate I get these errors:

    For XHTML:

Sorry, I am unable to validate this document because on line 113 it contained one or more bytes that I cannot interpret as utf-8 (in other words, the bytes found are not valid values in the specified Character Encoding). Please check both the content of the file and the character encoding indication.

    For CSS:

Please, validate your XML document first!

    Line 159

    Column 3

The element type "div" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "< / div>".

Well I've tried to do both, but I have no idea where to look or what to do, so please could someone advise on getting this right?

Secondly - my site looks like hell on IE - almost everything looks broken or misaligned - would welcome advice on this too - it's almost validated, but still looks like hell on IE?! I don't get it :(

    Thanks in advance

Nothing ever looks right for IE unless you spend countless hours trying to get it to work, or you only design for IE and not for standards or other browsers. Welcome to the IE Haters Club. Admission is $5, free beer.

Its something to do with the character right after 'Previous'

just delete that and put & # 187 (with no spaces in between) and save it.

    that should solve the problem.

please just dont blame IE, with your eyes closed... :)

Thanks for the suggestion Sadish, what would be the opposite of that for the next? Previous was >> so next would be <<

Also, it still looks diabolical in IE is there an "ie online fixer" or something that will tell me what I need to do to get it working in IE?

EDIT: I fixed the newer/previous posts thing.

Fixing that one error has given me even more errors, all my tags seem correct but the validator says othewise.

Please advise, or somehow I can check what's wrong?

from a brief look, it looks like you might have 1 too many </div>s. Try removing one right before you footer...

removing those divs added 4 more errors, replacing the divs back brought it back to 8 - I can't tell whether having more errors means it's better xhtml and therefore showing other errors, or if having more divs is fixing the errors! :(

try commenting to the side of your closing </div>s to really get a good idea of what each one is closing and to find if you have any extra. Then you will truly know how many real errors you have...

I added one extra div within one of the files, did a revalidate and it comes out Xhtml 1.0 compliant - it passed all of them except for Frameset - but I suppose that isn't relevant to my site?

you have no idea how it makes me feel....

It all looks ok now cheers
