Page Templates broken

I have been adding static pages to my website for the last few days as I add content etc.
All has gone well and I have been able to use the templates to get the type of page I need. I have only one Post or Blog type page on the site.

Now today for some reason I cannot create a static page no matter what template I use. All the pages are created as Blog pages with the Archive sidebar and Add comments box at the bottom.

What could have caused this? And more importantly how do I get it back to the point where I can add a static page again. I need to finish this site 🙁

I am a relative newbie to WP so it is possible I am missing something obvious.

I would appreciate any input.
