• Hi
I appreciate that my question basically crosses over between this forum and Buddypress. Edin theme to me is very clean and functional with a fair degree of customisation on its own. But I have one major prob.

I want it for a community blog and site and have installed Buddypress and bbpress. Despite reading shedloads of support forums and posts I cannot get the forums etc pages to go full page width – they default to 2 column with right sidebar and frankly look pretty awful. (That’s the Buddypress default). Has anyone else managed to find a work around through php manipulation or even css?

I’ve set up child theme(incidentally used Child Theme Configurator plug in which was so easy to install? – does not use çimport etc etc and is all radio buttons. The support has already proved brilliant. Also pro version available which may get. Recommend to all those having trouble with set up of child theme.

Back to query. When bbpress and Buddy press installed Edin page templates folder returns following php files:- alternate-sidebar page php; buddypress.php; front-page.php; full-width page.php; grid page php

The buddypress.php is obviously the default page we get under Template on page edit as it has right sidebar etc etc. The other 4 are as above.

I’ve tried renaming buddypress.php as default-page.php and creating another full width page and saved that as buddypress.php. Unfortunately that and a whole host of other attempts have not worked. I even tried using, under plugin directory – buddypress>bp-themes>bp default> to the ‘one column page.php file and tried inserting that into the child theme, but again without any joy.

Unfortunately most threads on this talk about setting up a buddypress.php file due to the nature of Buddypress cascade feature when it is looking for a place to go but Edin now already has one and as I said, trying to ‘con’ it by renaming etc has not worked so far.

Also before anyone asks- using or trying to use full pasge template on any configured Buddypress page, with or without shortcode I’m afraid doesn’t work either as it reverts and defaults when published.

Has anyone any ideas or know of a plug-in that might do the job?

I should also add that the CTC plug in only really deals with stylesheets but has original template functioning but does not work with plugins and so my edin-child does not contain any php detail but when I’ve been experimenting, I’ve pulled across the relevant php detail from parent to the child theme and then worked on that. Do you think that is sufficient or should all php function be on the child to try to solve this?

Sorry -I know this is not strictly an Edin theme matter but others may have come across a similar problem and may do in future as the theme is great for using as combination site and for social community.

I also have to say that both social plugins went in without a hitch, and it looks as though css customisation is not going to be too difficult to alter. The CTC does have that functionality by the way for a lot of the obvious changes you may want to make. Takes a bit of getting used to but does it for you and offers previews etc. Incidentally – I’m not part of their sales team, just that it’s proving very useful!!

Grateful for any help at all please. I’m a glass is always half full merchant, well unless it’s a session obviously, and so here’s hoping!!

    Thanks a lot.

    Bibblehead (Rob)

PS Just for info, I’m using Wamp local server for site set up but that should not be making any difference I don’t think.

  • Rob – if you could get this up on a test server I’d be glad to take a look and help troubleshoot for a bit. This kind of issue is pretty difficult to solve without seeing the site in question. Caveat: I’ve never used BuddyPress myself so my knowledge is limited to the Edin side. 🙂

Kathryn – thanks for replying so quickly. By getting it up on a test server, do you mean by getting direct access for you to my wamp localhost?

I’ll also dig around on the net for some info and I do appreciate you trying to help although you’ve not used Buddypress before, but the Edin theme really does lend itself to creating great community and social blogsites.

    Cheers, Rob

do you mean by getting direct access for you to my wamp localhost?

No, I meant installing the site on a remote server somewhere, even if it’s password-protected, so I can see it.

Another route is to post in the BuddyPress forums – perhaps someone there would be able to help.

Another idea is to post a screenshot so at least I can see the problem.

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot – in a graphic format like JPG, PNG, or PDF – in your Media Library, and provide a link so I can see it, or upload it with a service like Imgur or Snaggy.

    Kathryn
Hopefully from the 3 screenshots below

    http://snag.gy/G2TrP.jpg

you can get an idea of what I’m trying to put right. As you can see there is a third column on right hand side – basically a sidebar which is like the default page but I need it to be full page without the sidebar.

Please also excuse the content/avatars etc etc – only put in for testing at the moment.

I am going to post on Buddypress support as well, but this appears to have been a problem for some time and the solutions always seem to depend on php files and how they are configured in the roots.

Sorry – couldn’t use media library as obviously only on local host – so used Snaggy – very quick.

I will do further research tomorrow on you being able to see my wamp – I know it’s possible, just a bit complicated to set up and config security and access, as I don’t want full internet access as will be corrupted in seconds.

Anyway – thanks again – nearly 1am here in Italy and so will say goodnight. Be in touch again tomorrow.

On forgot to say – please let me know if s/shots are any good or if they need doing again with more detail – you just say.

    Cheers, Rob

Kathryn – just for info, I have written to Buddypress support. In the meantime I’ll keep trying different things as this is so frustrating!

Hi Rob, thanks for the screenshots.

Could you paste the contents of your full-width buddypress.php file in a Pastebin and provide a link here?

    http://pastebin.com/

    Thanks!

    Hi Kathryn

    This is;-
    the buddypress.php under: wp-content>edin-child>page templates –
    http://pastebin.com/CvqXSYi6

the full-width-page.php under same path to page templates –
    http://pastebin.com/VY4wpMAw

I have been through them several times but they seem identical to me which is very odd – particularly as buddypress.php starts off with ‘Full width page’ Plus the buddypress.php says nothing about ‘get sidebar’ which all the forums suggest is the way you get full page buddypress by deleting that code from the default sidebar page, but there isn’t one! – please see snaggy screenshot below.

I went further exploring and found under wp-content>plugins>bp-themes>bp-default>page.php
    http://pastebin.com/dtWpGYzn

I have tried substituting this last one for the buddypress.php – first one in list, but to no avail.

What I have done though is gone right back to the start and created a new forums page on full width page template and with some fiddling managed to get it full page on site – yippee! – but as soon as I go down to the next level and pick a forum off the index list the page defaults to the sidebar showing page.

If I delete everything from sidebar obviously everything in Buddypress then shows full page. However I want/need sidebar for posts and some other pages, which in page templates is shown as default page on wordpress dashboard when selecting the type of page but there is no ‘default-page’ template under the theme page templates and so I think it just picks up the third one I’ve pasted which is from the Buddypress default theme which I didn’t think existed anymore, although obviously that got installed as bp-default.

Probably totally confusing you now but what baffles me is where is wordpress getting its default php from for the default page if selected – for adding ordinary page in that format and not necessarily buddypress?

Screenshot of default option page when adding new page
    http://snag.gy/p6ZlD.jpg

and here is the list of page templates available in the edin-child theme
    http://snag.gy/VsdJJ.jpg

So – Kathryn, on re-reading this must sound terribly confusing for you and whether it’s a Buddypress or theme issue I really don’t know.

Forgot to say – when you choose and publish default page it works absolutely fine – where the php info is though, I really don’t know!

Unless there is something fundamental I’ve missed that you pick up I think I may have to live with it.

Again thaere are countless threads/posts/webpages and sites devoted to the Buddypress one page problem but the little devil is still out there and causing problems.

As usual I really appreciate your time.

    Kind regards
    Rob

    the buddypress.php under: wp-content>edin-child>page templates –
    http://pastebin.com/CvqXSYi6

the full-width-page.php under same path to page templates –
    http://pastebin.com/VY4wpMAw

Could you try putting those two theme files at the root of edin-child and not within any sub-folder? So they should go here:

    wp-content > edin-child

Also, I’m not able to see those pastes because they’re private. 🙂

Let me know how it goes.
